Chinese Classics Redefined

Located inside of W Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Yen is a modern Cantonese restaurant designed around the idea of reflective nostalgia, where cultural memory is transformed into contemporary spatial expression. The project draws from everyday domestic symbols found in Chinese households, the red cloth hung above thresholds, the glow of lanterns during festivals, and the auspicious color red, and reinterprets them as large-scale architectural elements.

The entry sequence is defined by a sweeping canopy of red mesh drapery. This feature references the red doorway cloth but elevates it into an immersive installation, signaling welcome while framing the transition into the dining space.

The main hall is anchored by a monumental lantern that extends vertically into mirrored ceilings, producing infinite reflections. This gesture transforms a familiar festive object into a sculptural totem that establishes both rhythm and atmosphere, suspending the space between memory and dream.

The ambience is shaped by dark surfaces and layered lighting, introducing subtle dystopian undertones. Red acts as the primary visual language, appearing in drapery, reflections, and sculptural details. In contrast, refined finishes, such as a bar counter in white wood onyx and shelving patterned with abstracted lantern motifs, provide moments of precision and lightness within the interior.

Reflect, Reconcile, Redefine

Yen situates cultural heritage within a contemporary and speculative framework. By abstracting domestic rituals into immersive installations, the restaurant positions Cantonese dining as both rooted in tradition and reimagined for the future.
