Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s city centre, Sun & Moon transforms an abandoned bungalow into a contemporary dining destination shaped by daylight, texture, and the duality between day and night. Two moods, one space. Conceived as a brunch café that transitions into a lounge with DJ-led ambience after sunset, the design adopts a minimalist palette of light oak, reclaimed timber, grey travertine, and soft-toned fabrics create an atmosphere of calm restraint, while exposed brick walls preserve the building’s original patina, honouring the memory of its former state. Lush greenery drapes across key architectural elements, softening the interior and bringing the outdoors in.
At the entrance, an ebony tree stands beneath a circular skylight, giving the impression that it grows through the building acting as the waiting area for guest. Inside, the Sun Bar’s glass ceiling is wrapped in timber slats that filter natural light and cast shifting shadows throughout the day, while a grey travertine counter provides a sculpted focal point for the daytime café identity.
The heart of the project, however, is the sunken pit dining area, which forms the true core of the entire restaurant. Set beneath a linear skylight that spans the length of the room, this recessed zone gathers daylight in a dramatic yet serene way, creating a natural gathering place that anchors the flow of the restaurant. The sunken level enhances intimacy while maintaining visual connection to the rest of the space, becoming the central social and atmospheric nucleus. By day, it is filled with soft, luminous natural light; by night, it transforms into the vibrant centre of the lounge experience, framed by warm ambient lighting and rhythmic shadows.
Around the periphery, semi-private dining nooks are formed by sculptural vertical timber slats, offering moments of enclosure without disrupting spatial openness. These niches echo Scandinavian ideals of human-scaled comfort while maintaining seamless connectivity with the main dining floor.
Throughout the day, Sun & Moon presents an airy, light-filled calm defined by natural materials and gentle illumination. After dusk, the character shifts the timber deepens in tone, lighting becomes more dramatic, and the sunken pit evolves into an animated social hub. The space moves effortlessly between serenity and vibrancy, reflecting the full cycle of its namesake: the clarity of the sun and the allure of the moon.
